Semiconductor foundries are also known as semiconductor fabrication plants (usually referred to as fab).
Semiconductor foundries are of two types: Pure-play foundries and IDMs. This classification is used to differentiate between companies that perform in-house semiconductor manufacturing and fabless companies that outsource designs to third parties. Fabless companies outsource manufacturing to avail cost benefits.
